Sad Characters
January 25, 2007 by Melissa

I think I have finally made a breakthrough. I was having problems working out some of the bumps in Lessons in Seduction, the second book in the Once Upon an Accident Series. Kally was reading a part of it tonight and said that Cecily was so sad. She hit the nail on the head and I think I realized what was holding me down.
I deal with smart asses and sarcastic characters, but I am not used to handling this part of the emotional curve so much. There is always some sadness in my books. A scene I wrote in ALHS for the rerelease made me actually cry when I read through it the first time. But Cecily and Douglas are both very lonely. Both are without their parents(a good thing actually) but they have never quite fit in. Douglas is accepted because he is a Duke, but he still feels as if he has no place. Cecily is not a social butterfly and prefers history to teas and ballgowns. But, she does have a wicked sense of humor, something I have been having fun with. She rarely shows it though.
These two need each other so badly, I think I was afraid I wasn’t giving a story that they deserved. But, it seems that I made a breakthrough tonight. Off to play with this one scene a bit more and then hitting the sack. Have a full day of writing and kids tomorrow. Sweet dreams.
