I love music, and it really inspires a lot of my writing. Raining on Sunday helped me with A Little Harmless Pleasure and You Know MY Name, inspired the idea behing Purgatory. I played the flute in HS, and can’t be in the car without some kind of nonchild noise. I grew up in the 70s, was part of the Madonna bad clothing choices of the 80’s, and now freak my kids out when I put on Donna Summer and sing. Well, mainly the 13 yr old and when I am picking her up in front of her friends.
So, what I want to know is if there is a song that brings back a memory for you? Is there something from your memory that is triggered by a song?
I have several. One is any Frankie Valley and the Four Seasons song. My dad used to crank the music on Saturday mornings and sing to it, and I remember listening to him. Then, there is Paul McCartney’s Silly Love Songs reminds me of one of the last trips we made when we lived in Germany. We went to Austria and the Black Forest and that was one of the most popular songs on Armed Forces Network. Now, more recently, You Are My Sunshine reminds me of being in the hospital right after having both kids, because it is one of the first songs I sang to each of them. Push by Sarah Mclachlan reminds me of my husband every time I hear it.
Don’t have to name it exactly right, but give me a song and the memory it inspires in the comments. More print books signed by me up for grabs.
Mel
ps, sorry I was late today. Had to run around for moving stuff today. Contest will run until NINE PM central.

Tainted Love by Soft Cell - this song was my floor music while I was a gymnast in high school, so I heard the song hundreds of times during practice and competition! So now, whenever I hear it on the radio (or anyone in my family hears it) we think of my younger, more athletic days

For me it is the Doobie Brother’s albulm, Stampede. It came out during my courtship years, and the song, Black Water, still brings back lots of great memories.

New Order’s Bizarre Love Triangle takes me straight back to high school and being at a dance with the boy I liked at the time. That was SUCH a long time ago!
And we played Collin Raye’s album Counting Sheep nearly every night as we bathed our eldest, so hearing songs from that remind me of when he was small enough to fit in the bathroom sink

I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers evokes memories of when my now husband and I were first dating back in England. He loved trekking and long rambles in the countryside usually ending at a cozy pub. We spent quite a bit of time hiking and seeing castle and abbey ruins, stopping for lunch and a pint and talking about our future together. It was our theme song and I still love it.

When I was a little girl my mother would put Buddy Holly’s Greatest Hits on the record player while she did housework. I remember spinning around and around to That’ll Be the Day and Rave On. I still love those songs.

When we was growing up me and my sister loved Bon Jovi. I still love his music today and listen to it. I love hearing my old faves though. Livin’ On A Prayer, Wanted Dead or Alive, and You Give Love a Bad Name. We would play these songs outside as loud as we could everyday after school. lol

Stop In The Name of Love_ brings me back to when I was in middle school, I’d spend after school at my cousins house and we’d perform Stop in the Name of Love for each other. We still laugh as we remember our silly dances.:)

What a fun topic! The older songs by Kenny Rogers and The Beach Boys, as my future hubby and I saw them when they played at our college. When I hear any of the songs we heard them perform, I remember the fun time we had at their concerts.

Well, I saw your e-mail come through on the Samhain readers group, where I’m a lurker. I have read on of your books A Little Harmless Pleasure. And I have several other of your books in my TBP list.
Anyway to your topic about music.
Chicago’s - Your The Inspiration reminds me of my very first boyfriend.
Tainted Love - reminds me of working at the local skating rink back home.
Any song by Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, Ernest Tubb, Hank Williams Sr, reminds me of my Dad - who first introduced to to music.

Every time I hear Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones it brings back memories of how three of my friends and I traveled to Akron, Ohio in the early 1970’s to see them perform in the Akron Rubber Bowl. Loved being under the stars watching them sing. After the show they had fireworks and it was pretty cool.

When I was single, during my ‘I only date hockey players’ period, I did a lot of ice skating and the soundtrack to “Top Gun” was popular. Hearing “Take My Breath Away” by Berlin or “Black Velvet” by Alannah Myles bring it back like it was yesterday. Skating backwards in the couples skate… Good times.

Hi Mel!!! I haven’t heard music since the 7o’s and too then I didn’t understand alot of lyrics but my sisters would write down as much as they could! Its so neat now that you can look up any lyrics. I do that from songs that I remember then. Maybe I’m the oldest one here, smile, but I remember alot of one hit wonders like BILLY DON’T BE A HERO and alot of the Eagles. So I don’t know the current music but the music I could feel in the past goes through my head often and I have to look up the lyrics so I can finally sing the words in my head, LOL
PS Love your blog here! Cathie

Stephanie, once I was on a train ride home from visiting my family and I didn’t know where to sit so I went to a part of the train and sat, and I realized I was sitting with the Buffalo Sabres hockey team! I apologized but they told me to stay so I did. They look great up close.
