To find out more about Karen, cruise by her website for all her appearances and releases!
1. What drew you to writing romance?
Pure escapism. I discovered writing is as much fun as reading. I loved the idea of creating my own characters and giving the story my own ending. Also, if I get really pissed off at someone I can always kill them off in my next book.
2. Is there a specific genre that you haven’t been published in and would like to try?
Young Adult. It’s the child in me not wanting to grow up. Growing up is for old people. Life should always be fun!
You’ve done aliens recently with your books Close Encounters of the Sexy Kind and your newest release, The Bad Boys Guide to the Galaxy and ghosts in Double Dating with the Dead. Are you planning any more paranormal books?
Certainly! I love paranormal. I was conducting my own séances when I was 13 years old. I have 2 ghost stories and another in my Planet Nerak series coming out in 2009.
3. Name three books on your keeper shelf.
Sharon Sala: Jackson Rule (actually all her books)
Rosemary Rogers: Sweet Savage Love
Kathleen E. Woodwiss: The Flame and the Flower
And wayyyyy too many more. Don’t we all?
4. When writing, is there a particular soundtrack you listen to? Is it different for each book?
It depends on the scene. Sometimes I listen to Matchbox 20 or Shakira and sometimes to Enya. I also like Enrique Iglesias.
5. What do you have coming up in the next few months?
The Bad Boys Guide to the Galaxy—the third book in my Planet Nerakian series just came out. In Oct is the reissue of I’m Your Santa to mass market. In Jan 2009 is My Favorite Phantom about a ghost hunter who’s afraid of ghosts. I’ll have another ghost book around May or June, and then Lyraka’s story from the Planet Nerak series in Dec.
Now for the fun questions:
6. They’ve decided to make The Bad Boys Guide to the Galaxy into a movie and you are in luck. The company is going to let you “interview” the actors vying for the part. Who would you like for the part of Sam and why?
First, I would have to interview a lot of them, but I think for Sam I would probably choose Brad Pitt.
7. You and Karl get a million dollars given to you. But, you can only use it to travel. Where would you go?
Italy first. Someday…..
8. Who is your favorite kind of hero: The Joker, The Soldier, or The Tortured Soul?
The joker, hands down. I married a joker, and they’re fun to be around. His personality rubbed off on me, I think.
Thank you, Karen!!!

Great interview.
Hi, Karen! Waving from Kentucky! I can say I “knew you when.”
I’m so happy for your success.
Congratulations on all your success, Karen. I’m a huge fan and am very glad to see all the titles you have coming up in 2009!
“Also, if I get really pissed off at someone I can always kill them off in my next book.” Now why didn’t I think of that? Maybe I should write along with editing, LOL!
loved the first book in this series. And got the 2nd one in my tbr pile. your sense of humor is fantastic.
Hi, Karen! I love your sense of humor. Does Karl know he’s a joker and the impact he has had on you?
I love your books!
Great interview, Karen - I think you would do well with Young Adult book, hope that you get to try your hand at it
Thanks for the terrific interview, Karen and Melissa! Humor is such an important part of life! I love to see it in the books I read, and I love to be able to laugh when funny or not so funny things happen in real life
And I hope to never see myself killed off in a future book
Hi Karen, looks like we have the same keeper shelf. Escapism is exactly why I adore reading romance stories, and I am looking forward to reading The Bad Boys Guide To The Galaxy.
Did anything exciting happen during the seances you conducted?
I love hearing that authors “kill” people who piss them off!
I married a joker who is a former soldier/current sailor. (I also think he has a tortured soul, but he won’t listen to me! LOL)
Ooh, I’d love to see a YA book from you. I’ll be watching. Great interview.
Great interview! How many books will be in the Planet Nerakian series?
What a great interview. I can’t wait to read the Planet Nerakian series.
Hey Melissa and Karen!
Great interview! Karen, I have a feeling that you and Karl are very compatible when it comes to senses of humor - you’re a riot! I can’t wait to read your Bad Boys book!
An author “twofer” for me…Melissa Schroeder, who is new to me and my first just finished read of Karen Kelley (just finished Temperature’s Rising). It was a fun read….Nancy:)
Hi Karen!
When you publish in the Young Adult genre, do you think you will use a different pen name?
I have to say that I think I would also prefer a joker. Which is probably why I’m still single since none of the guys I’ve had relationships with have had much of a sense of humor. Now where can you meet a guy who has that perfect blend of Alpha Male dominance and humor?
Sounds like a great series and I enjoyed the interview!
Hi Karen,
Jackson Rule is on my keeper shelf too!
I am really looking forward to reading your Planet Nerak series!
Great interview! I really look forward to reading The Bad Boys Guide to the Galaxy. My Favorite Phantom sounds intriguing, too. There aren’t enough good ghost romances.
My favorite kind of hero is the tortured soul, but the joker is good, too.
awesome interview. I love the joker too lol
Hi, Karen
You know, I still like to read Young Adult from time to time and hope that one day you do get published in that genre
Great interview
