Ava Rose Johnson-The Interview

July 14, 2008 by Melissa

Thanks to Ava once again for being the author today. Remember, you can have three chances at winning if you comment on all THREE posts about her today.

Your latest release, Power, is part of the Vampire Oracle series at Cobblestone. Can you tell us a little about the series as a whole?

The Vampire Oracle is a series of 25 novellas written by different (but equally wonderful) authors. Each novella is based on a Vampire Oracle card (my card is Power). The mystery of the cards is solved in the last book. However, each novella can be read as a stand-alone too.

You write in a few different genres. Do you find it difficult to jump from one to another? Do you have a favorite?

No and no. I love jumping from genre to genre, it keeps my imagination alive and my muse inspired. After angsting over a dark paranormal, it’s very refreshing to dive into a light-hearted contemporary.

Do you have a common theme that you find in your different genres?

I am partial to the “reunited lovers” theme. I love bringing old lovers together and watching the sparks fly. I’ve used the ex-lovers theme in In Control, an erotic contemporary coming in September from Phaze. I’ve also used it in Cyr’s Revenge, a gay futuristic that’s currently looking for a home.

Control is another big theme in my books. You’re bound to find some kind of power struggle in everything I’ve written.

What brought you to writing erotic romance?

I discovered erotic romance about five years ago when I picked up a Harlequin Blaze in the library. I then discovered Black Lace and Kensington Brava. Eventually, I found Ellora’s Cave and Samhain and Loose Id and devoured about a million erotic romances before deciding to try my hand at it. As soon as I started on my first novella, I was hooked on the writing bug!

What do you have coming up in the future?

A lot! I have an erotic contemporary coming out in September called In Control. Also, I recently signed a contract with Loose Id for a werewolf ménage called Beauty and the Beasts. That should release before the end of the year.

At the moment I’m hopping from project to project. I have a romantic suspense/ménage that I need to get finished. I also have two BDSM novellas and an m/m in the pipeline.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Dangerous Grounds by Shelli Stevens (this one is on my e-keeper shelf )

Wuthering Heights.

Now for the fun questions

You won an all expenses paid cruise to the Caribbean. It is going wonderfully, until the ship has some problems, and you find yourself on a raft floating to a desert island. Name one person you would want in the raft and on the island with you and why?

The guy from the Dolce and Gabbana ‘Light Blue’ commercial. Check it out:

Once you watch it, you won’t need to ask me why I’d choose him.

What do you attracts you the most: A sense of humor, a hot body, or a kind heart?
A sense of humor always grabs me first. If you can make me laugh, then you’re in with a shot.

Of course, I’m not saying I’d turn down the hot body *wink*

Pick your favorite kind of hero: The Tortured Soul, The Bad Boy, or The Easy Going but Strong Guy.

I’d choose The Tortured Soul (think Angel in Buffy the Vampire Slayer). But I’m a big fan of The Bad Boy too.

What is your one pet peeve as a reader?
An ending that doesn’t leave me completely satisfied. I’m not saying that I always need a happy ending. But I need it to make sense to me as a reader.

Love the interview very much and I agree wth Nell that you sound very busy. I also agree with you Ava about that being one of my pet peeve as a reader because I also don’t like an ending that leaves me completely unsatisfied.

I also agree with you completely about wanting to have the HOT guy from the Dolce and Gabbana ‘Light Blue’ commercial with you in the raft and on the island.

    Hi Ava!

I love vampires! Always have and always will, and I have to say that the word erotic just goes hand in hand with the word vampire.

    Hi Ava!
Thanks for the great interview! I am throughly intrigued by “Vampire Oracle” series and the cards. I admit I have never heard of that before. I am absolutely enamored with vampires! Vampires are just totally sexy and erotic, the world would be so boring without them, dont you think? ;);)
I agree, I’d want that guy from the ad with me too!!!

    I absolutely love paranormal romances.
Sounds like you have a lot of exciting projects going on, just try not to expend all your energies. we will love them all even if we have to wait for them. It just builds up the suspense more.

Vampires are my favorite subjects to read and write about! Like you, my muse doesn’t stay on one genre though. It makes for quite an array of ideas doesn’t it?

Ava, what info were you able to find what the Tarot card “Power” means? Did you use that as a guide for writing this? I’ve never seen Tarot cards so this is so neat.

I love reading a variety too! So its fun to read a variety too from an author. I shall be off to check out your site and blog! It was great meeting you here today,
